ChatGPT now makes GIFs, on the free plan too

On November 4, 2026, OpenAI released Images 2.6. The headline feature is that ChatGPT can now make a GIF, a short looping animation, from a description or from your own sketch. It's available on every ChatGPT plan, Free included, on web, desktop and mobile. OpenAI also says images now generate 50% faster. Here is how to make a ChatGPT GIF, and the fine print the launch videos skip.

What changed in Images 2.6

OpenAI's announcement says Images 2.6 "is available globally today in ChatGPT and Codex across all subscription tiers on desktop, mobile, and web", and that it "generates images 50% faster than before". Characters also stay more consistent when you ask for edits.

GIF creation is the exception to "available today". OpenAI's help center says it "is rolling out in ChatGPT". If you don't see it yet, your account may get it a little later. Nothing is wrong with your settings.

Step 1: ask for a looping GIF

In any ChatGPT chat, or by tapping More and then Images, ask for a looping GIF and say what should move. OpenAI's own example is a good starting point:

Make a looping GIF of a paper boat bobbing on the water.

Swap the boat for your own idea. The more clearly you describe the movement ("the flag waves", "the cat's tail swings left and right"), the closer the result gets.

Step 2: make your own sketch move

You can also start from an image. Upload a drawing or a photo in the chat and ask ChatGPT to animate it. OpenAI's release notes give the example of uploading a sketch and asking ChatGPT to "make the character wave".

To change the result, describe the edit in the same chat. When you're happy with it, open the GIF to adjust its playback speed, save it to your device or share it.

The fine print

The free plan has a limit, and OpenAI doesn't publish the number. Its Free tier FAQ only says that image creation has limits and that ChatGPT will tell you when you reach one. If you plan to make many GIFs in a day, expect to hit it.

"Images with thinking", where ChatGPT reasons about the picture before drawing it, is not on Free. OpenAI lists it for Plus, Pro and Business.

Some launch videos mention SVG export and image markup. Those are developer features in the API (the gpt-image-2.6 models), not buttons in the ChatGPT app.

What you can use GIFs for

A short loop works as a reaction in a chat, a small moving logo, a story sticker or a simple demo of an idea. Because you can start from your own sketch, it's also a quick way to bring a character you drew to life without animation software. If you post the result, say it was made with AI where the platform asks for it.
