Gemini 4 Carbon: Google's strongest model isn't open yet

On October 28, 2026, Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon, which it calls its strongest model so far. YouTube titles are treating it as something you can open today. You can't. Gemini 4 Carbon is going first to a small group of cyber defenders, and Google has given no date for the Gemini app, for developers or for businesses. Here is what Google actually announced and what you can use right now.
What Gemini 4 Carbon is built for
Google describes Carbon as a model for long coding jobs and security work: "our strongest model with state-of-the-art cybersecurity and long horizon capabilities". The headline numbers come from Google's own testing:
- 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, a test of finding real flaws in software.
- 71.0% on CWE-bench, a test of turning those findings into working code fixes.
These are the maker's scores, not an independent review. Treat them as Google's claim until outside testers can try the model.
Why does this matter for ordinary users? A model that is good at long coding jobs can keep working on a large project for hours without losing track, which is what most people want from an AI coding assistant. The security part matters more to companies: finding a flaw is only useful if someone can fix it, and Google's pitch is that Carbon does both. Neither benefit reaches you until the model leaves the early-access group, so for now this is news to watch rather than a tool to try.
Why defenders go first
A model this good at finding software flaws could help attackers as much as defenders, and Google says it is taking a deliberate approach to the rollout. "Starting this week," the announcement says, Carbon goes to "a subset of cyber defenders", with access widening gradually to trusted partners through what Google calls the Fairwind Program.
According to DeepMind, Fairwind gives early access to high-priority defenders such as governments, healthcare providers and telecom companies. Google also says Carbon is part of the US government's voluntary pre-release testing process for new models.
Google's other claims
Compared with Gemini 4 Argon, its current top model, Google says Carbon makes about half as many unsupported claims. It also says Carbon shows you conflicting sources before it acts, instead of picking one without telling you. Both come from Google's internal tests.
What you can use today
Carbon is not in the Gemini app yet. Here is what is:
- Free users get Auto mode, which is mostly Flash-Lite.
- Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app.
- Developers can use Argon through the Gemini API.
What to do now
If you are on the free plan or a paid plan, there is nothing to change. Google says Carbon will reach developers, businesses and consumers "soon", without a date. When it arrives in the Gemini app, it will appear in the model list.
Developers already know the price: the same introductory price as Argon, $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input 95% cheaper.
FAQ
Can I use Gemini 4 Carbon in the Gemini app?
Not yet. Google is giving it first to a small group of cyber defenders and has not set a date for the Gemini app.
How much will Gemini 4 Carbon cost developers?
Google says it will have the same introductory price as Argon: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
What is the Fairwind Program?
It is Google DeepMind's early-access program for high-priority defenders, such as governments, hospitals and telecom providers, who get Carbon before everyone else.
