Selling AI PDFs on Etsy: the new rule, and what still sells

Videos telling you to sell AI PDFs on Etsy are getting hundreds of thousands of views. The idea still works, but one popular version of it stopped working on October 22, 2026. That day Etsy banned AI-generated instructions: recipes, patterns, project plans and how-to guides. If your plan was a 28-day puppy training program or a smoothie recipe book written by AI, Etsy no longer allows it. Here is what the rule says, what still sells, and how to make a printable PDF with Claude in three steps.
What Etsy's new rule bans
Etsy's Seller Handbook puts it plainly: "AI-generated functional instructions are not allowed on Etsy." The list includes recipes, craft patterns, project plans, instruction manuals, and "instructional guides or e-books that provide directions for completing a task".
The reason is that buyers rely on that information. Etsy says it "must be your own work", and you need to show an actual result made with your instructions, not an AI-generated image of one. So a pattern you designed yourself, photographed in real life, is still fine. A pattern written by a chatbot is not.
What still sells: fill-in, not how-to
Our reading of the rule is that things buyers fill in and print are not instructions, so they fall outside the ban:
- Planners: budget, wedding, teacher or habit planners.
- Trackers and charts: habit trackers, chore charts, savings trackers.
- Templates: calendars, fill-in checklists, meal-plan grids.
You still have to say you used AI. Since June 2025 Etsy's Creativity Standards require sellers to "disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI."
Step 1: ask Claude for the whole PDF
Claude can create files you download, including PDFs, and Anthropic says this is available on every plan, the free one included. Turn it on in Settings, then Capabilities, then Create and edit files. Then give it one detailed prompt, for example:
Create a printable monthly budget planner as a PDF for young couples. US Letter pages: a year-at-a-glance page, one page per month for income, bills and savings, and a debt tracker. Clean, calm style, easy to print.
You get a PDF with every page laid out: a year at a glance, twelve monthly pages and a debt tracker. Claude drafts it; you edit it. Read every page, rewrite whatever sounds generic, and check every number and formula. You are the editor, and the product is only as good as your edit.
Step 2: list it and say it's made with AI
On Etsy, listing costs $0.20, Etsy takes 6.5% of each sale, and payment processing adds more (in the US, 3% + $0.25). Write in the description that you made the item with AI.
If you would rather sell from your own page, Payhip has a free plan that takes 5% per sale, plus PayPal or Stripe fees. Payhip doesn't have Etsy's search traffic, so you bring the buyers yourself.
Step 3: bring buyers from Pinterest
People search Pinterest when they plan something: a budget, a wedding, a new puppy. That makes it a good match for planners and trackers. Make three pins for each product, each with a different angle and each linking to the product. One pin won't do much, so keep adding new ones every week. Results vary, and nobody can promise you sales from pins.
Three checks before you list
- Fill-in, not how-to: no AI recipes, patterns or guides.
- Say AI in the listing description.
- Check every page yourself.
